Germany research ministry delays funding for national decade on post‑infectious diseases
The German Federal Ministry of Research has approved only roughly half of the budget allocated for the "National Decade against Postinfectious Diseases" for 2026. Of the 50 million euros earmarked for the year, about 22 million euros have been transferred, but only 5.1 million euros have actually been spent.
Linke MP Sonja Lemke criticised the government, saying the promised joint effort is not being felt, that funds risk being wasted and that the administration must switch to a faster work mode. She urged the government to treat the decade as an important political project. Estimates suggest several hundred‑thousand Germans suffer from post‑infectious conditions, largely stemming from the COVID‑19 pandemic.
The criticism was raised during a small‑question session by Minister Dorothee Bär (CSU) in response to a request from the Left parliamentary group, as reported by the Rheinische Post.
