German Retail Sales Show Modest Growth Amid Consumer Caution
German retailers posted a modest increase in the first half of 2026. Nominal turnover rose 2.2 % year‑on‑year, while price‑adjusted (real) sales were up only 0.7 %. The rise was driven mainly by higher prices rather than stronger consumer demand, with the Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE) noting that “the situation in retail is anything but good.”
In June 2026, sales fell 1.1 % real (1.2 % nominal) versus May, marking the first month‑on‑month decline after a 1.2 % real gain in May. Over the full half‑year, real sales were still 0.7 % higher than a year earlier, but the trend shows weakening momentum. Tank‑station revenues rose sharply in June, boosted by higher oil prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East and a temporary fuel‑tax rebate.
The HDE’s chief Stefan Genth warned that consumer sentiment remains at pandemic‑level caution, with more than half of retailers rating July demand as insufficient. While the overall outlook stays pessimistic, the sector expects a 2 % nominal growth for the full year, largely supported by online sales and price adjustments.
