Germany pension system: Updates on survivor benefits and retirement planning

Various aspects of the German pension and social security system are currently under focus, ranging from administrative updates to legal rulings and long-term planning.

In September, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung is conducting annual checks for young adults receiving orphan pensions. Recipients in training, studies, or voluntary service must provide updated documentation to ensure continued payments.

Regarding legal and financial matters, a court in North Rhine-Westphalia ruled that health insurance providers may charge contributions on both capital payments from occupational pensions and the resulting higher statutory pensions. Additionally, discussions around retirement planning for 2026 highlight the potential use of ETFs as a supplement to the statutory pension, which is projected to cover approximately 48 percent of average income.

For those requiring social assistance, the interaction between pensions and basic security (Grundsicherung) remains complex. While standard old-age pensions generally preclude basic security claims, exceptions exist for early retirement, certain survivor pensions, and partial disability pensions. Current projections for 2025 and 2026 show a gradual increase in the maximum statutory pension and the pension value.
