Germany reviews status of Russian House in Berlin

The German government is reviewing the legal basis for the Russian House in Berlin following a suspected drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in early August. While the perpetrator of the incident remains unconfirmed, some German politicians are calling for the closure of the cultural center, which is operated by the Russian state agency Rossotrudnichestvo.

There are concerns that the facility may be used by Russian intelligence services as a cover for hybrid activities or to influence the Russian diaspora. However, the German Foreign Office is proceeding with caution due to existing bilateral agreements from 2011. These treaties link the operation of the Russian House in Berlin to the continued operation of the Goethe-Institutes in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Novosibirsk. Terminating the agreement could lead to retaliatory closures of German cultural institutions within Russia.
