Germany revises BEG building subsidies, introduces income‑based tiers

Effective 21 July 2026 Germany’s federal funding programme for energy‑efficient buildings (BEG) will change its allocation rules. The KfW‑Förderportal is being paused while the new guidelines are prepared. Subsidies will become income‑based: households with lower or middle incomes will receive higher bonuses, while high‑income owners will see reduced support. The shift aims to keep heat‑pump installations financially attractive, as fossil‑fuel heating no longer receives any subsidies and rising CO₂ prices are expected to increase gas and oil costs.

The Verbraucherzentrale Rheinland‑Pfalz has sharply criticised the abrupt rollout, saying the sudden changes undermine planning certainty for owners, energy advisers and tradespeople. The consumer centre calls for greater transparency and longer lead times, noting that the final funding rules have not yet been published and that the changes could delay or deter energy‑renovation projects.
