Germany reports significant decline in asylum applications
Germany has recorded its lowest number of new asylum applications for the month of October in 15 years. According to data from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, 5,707 asylum seekers were registered in October, a decrease of approximately 35 percent compared to October 2025 and a 71 percent drop compared to 2024.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the government is successfully pushing back illegal migration. He noted that since Chancellor Friedrich Merz took office in May 2025, the administration has tightened migration policies, including increased border controls and more frequent rejections of individuals without valid entry documents.
In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, asylum arrivals in October reached their lowest level in 17 years, with only 131 arrivals reported. While government officials attribute the decline to stricter migration management, researchers suggest that changes in countries of origin also play a significant role in the decreasing numbers.
