Germany: Rising trend of early retirement among baby boomers

A new study by the Institute of the German Economy (IW) reveals a growing trend of early retirement among the baby boomer generation in Germany. According to the data, seven million baby boomers have already retired, with an additional twelve million expected to follow in the coming decade.

Focusing on the 1958 birth year, which completed its retirement transition in 2025, the study found that more than 25 percent of individuals opted for early retirement without pension deductions, while another 18 percent retired early with deductions. Only 37 percent of this cohort received a standard age pension, excluding those on full disability pensions.

The IW attributes these figures to low barriers to entry, such as the requirement of only five years of minimum membership for pension eligibility. To alleviate pressure on the statutory pension insurance and the labor market, the IW urges policymakers to implement recommendations from the Age Security Commission, including linking the standard retirement age to life expectancy and restricting early retirement options.
