Germany safe deposit box demand rises as bank branches close

Demand for private safe deposit boxes is rising in Germany as traditional banks reduce their offerings. This trend is driven by the increasing closure of bank branches; according to Bundesbank data, there were 17,870 branches in 2024, a decrease of nearly 1,600 from the previous year.

As banks exit the market, specialized private vault providers are filling the gap. A study by Stiftung Warentest, which compared 43 providers including 16 specialized firms, found significant variations in pricing and insurance coverage. The report noted that while specialized providers are generally more expensive than banks, they are increasingly sought after for storing valuables such as gold, jewelry, cash, and important documents.

Security concerns remain a factor, though consumer protection groups noted that financial institutions often do not provide specific information regarding the security of their vault facilities. The shift follows high-profile incidents, such as a robbery in Gelsenkirchen where damages were estimated at 30 million euros.
