Germany approves 'Frühstartrente' to fund children's pensions
The German cabinet has approved a draft law for the 'Frühstartrente' (Early Start Pension), a program designed to encourage early private retirement savings among children. Under the proposal, the federal government will contribute 10 euros per month into a certified pension depot for children starting from age six until they reach 18.
To increase the savings, parents are permitted to make voluntary contributions of up to 6,840 euros annually. The program aims to reduce inequality by providing a financial head start that does not depend solely on a family's economic status. Investment returns within the depot are tax-free until the payout phase begins, and the capital is generally not accessible before the age of 65.
The Ministry of Finance projects that the state-funded portion alone could grow to approximately 53,000 euros by retirement age due to the effects of compound interest. The law mandates that pension products used must be certified and adhere to an effective cost cap of one percent.
The initiative is scheduled to begin with children born in 2020, with payments applied retroactively to January 1, 2026. Subsequent birth years will be added annually. While the government views this as a way to strengthen the private pension pillar, the Linke party has criticized the initiative as 'symbol politics' that disproportionately benefits wealthy families through tax advantages.
