Germany schools face rising violence and security threats

Teachers in Germany are reporting a significant increase in violence and threats within primary and secondary schools. In Hessen, a primary school teacher reported daily physical altercations on the playground, instances of students attacking staff with scissors, and a specific incident where a student brought a homemade weapon—a club studded with nails—to school with the intent to kill a teacher.

Reports from a secondary school in the Rhineland describe a deteriorating environment characterized by drug dealing, fights, and severe behavioral issues. One educator noted that approximately 75 percent of the student body has a migrant background, with many students arriving from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, or Ukraine. The teacher highlighted extreme cases, including student prostitution linked to drug use and cultural clashes regarding classroom instruction.

The German Teachers' Association has criticized politicians for failing to expand necessary support systems, such as social work and school psychology, to meet rising demand. Educators cited high rates of sick leave and feelings of insecurity as major professional challenges.
