Germany seeks agreement on seaport financing

Germany's maritime coordinator, Christoph Ploß, is pushing for a swift agreement between the federal government and coastal states regarding the financing of German seaports. Ploß aims to reach a solution within 2026 to ensure necessary investments in critical infrastructure.

Currently, the federal government provides 38.3 million euros annually for all German seaports. However, coastal states and the maritime industry have long demanded significantly higher funding. Ploß argues that both the federal government and the states must increase their contributions to modernize ports, enhance digitalization through innovative technologies, and maintain international competitiveness.

Investment in seaports and waterways is considered vital for Germany's export economy, energy supply, and national defense capabilities. The maritime coordinator also noted that cooperation on port policy between the Union parties and the SPD has been productive.
