Germany seeks to bolster Ukraine air defense ahead of winter
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has identified air defense as Ukraine’s most critical vulnerability. During a briefing in Berlin, Merz stated that Berlin is working with international partners to strengthen Kyiv’s air defense capabilities and energy supply ahead of the upcoming winter.
Merz noted that he has held personal discussions with various heads of state to address these weaknesses. He also announced that Germany is conducting intensive consultations with European partners to expand support for Ukraine. These discussions are expected to precede the European Council summit in Brussels on October 15-16, with potential focuses on reinforcing air defenses and providing targeted assistance for Ukraine’s state budget.
The Chancellor warned that Russia will continue to target civilian infrastructure and cautioned European leaders against having illusions regarding Moscow’s intentions, emphasizing that the security of Europe is tied to Ukraine’s stability.
