Germany sees 46% drop in new asylum applicants in 2025

Official statistics released by Germany’s Federal Statistical Office show that the number of first‑time asylum seekers registered in the country fell from 289,000 in 2024 to about 155,000 in 2025, a decline of 46.4 percent. The sharpest decreases were recorded among Syrians (‑73.8%), Turks (‑65.0%) and Ukrainians (‑32.5%). In 2025, 93,000 Ukrainian asylum applications were filed, with a gender shift to roughly 51,000 men and 43,000 women, which the office attributes to the lifting of the travel ban on Ukrainian men under 22 in August 2025. Overall, Germany hosts around 3.236 million recognized refugees; of these, 178,000 are people whose asylum claims were rejected and remain in the country, while 361,000 have pending applications. About 13.4 % of asylum seekers could be subject to enforced removal. The year also saw a rise in residence permits granted on the basis of demonstrated integration, with roughly 42,000 cases in 2024 increasing further in 2025.
