Germany sees 82,920 residential burglaries in 2025 as holidays boost crime

According to the Bundeskriminalamt’s Police Crime Statistics 2025, Germany recorded 82,920 residential burglaries in 2025, a 5.7 % increase over the previous year and the highest level in recent years. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said that burglary protection remains a central challenge for internal security.

Security expert Patrick Wilma, head of Kompass Sicherheitstechnik GmbH, warned that the upcoming summer holidays create a high‑season for thieves. He explained that “an overflowing mailbox, permanently closed shutters and lack of evening lighting invite burglars,” and noted that only about 57 % of incidents are reported to police, suggesting the true figure is higher. Wilma recommends a multi‑layered security concept that includes visible alarm systems, 24/7 monitoring, smart lighting and automated shutters to deter and stop break‑ins during vacation periods.
