Germany sees CDU lawmaker defect to AfD amid debate on democratic efficiency

Thomas Diener, a former CDU state‑parliament member from Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, announced plans to join the AfD faction after leaving the CDU group. He cited opposition to the “brand wall” that blocks cooperation with the AfD and criticized the CDU’s handling of rural interests. Diener, who also serves as president of the district council for the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, could become the first regional council president to switch sides if the AfD accepts him.

An editorial in the July issue of Cicero called for an “efficiency cut” to Germany’s democratic system, arguing that the current coalition’s stalemate and growing party fragmentation hinder necessary reforms. The piece warned that without greater individual responsibility and a revamp of the party system, Germany risks falling behind economically and socially.
