Saxon Switzerland storm kills one, closes national park
A severe thunderstorm struck the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany on 1 August 2026, toppling numerous trees and causing a fatality. A 28‑year‑old man was killed by a falling tree on the Bastei trail, and several others were injured. The storm damaged roughly 25 hectares of forest between the Bastei, Rathen, Hohnstein and the Polenztal, prompting authorities to prohibit access to the area because of ongoing life‑danger risk.
Rescue forces of 30‑100 personnel, including fire‑brigade, mountain‑rescue and technical aid units, were deployed to survey the damage, map the site with drones and conduct search‑and‑rescue operations. Cleanup work is expected to continue into the following week. Performances at the Felsenbühne Rathen were cancelled through Sunday.
Saxon Minister‑President Michael Kretschmer pledged swift assistance for the affected communities. The storm also destroyed TV chef Verena Leister’s lakeside kiosk at the Amselsee, covering it with fallen trees and rendering the business unable to open for the remainder of the season.
