Germany features DDR-era monuments and new sleeping containers

On the island of Rügen, a holiday camp featuring original East German (DDR) bungalows has been granted monument protection. The 13 bungalows, located in Nonnevitz, serve as historical evidence of state-provided tourism in the DDR from the mid-1970s. The site, managed by Candy Dassler, maintains an authentic atmosphere with original furnishings, including lamps and wallpaper.

In a separate development in Saxony-Anhalt, a company called Beo has developed ‘Pop-up Caves’—small sleeping containers designed for dual use. In the summer, they provide shelter for festival attendees, while in the winter, they are intended to be rented to municipalities to protect homeless individuals from the cold. While some welfare organizations express concern that such boxes might lower the standard of care compared to social housing, others suggest they could offer a safer alternative for those avoiding traditional emergency shelters.
