Germany sees economic recovery and record startup growth

Germany is experiencing an economic recovery, with growth forecasts for 2026 and 2027 revised upward to 1.3% and 1.1%, respectively. A key indicator of this trend is a record increase in new business startups; according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, over 3,000 new enterprises were established in the first half of 2026, a 52% increase compared to the previous six-month period.

Ulrich Reuter, President of the Association of German Savings Banks (DSGV), noted that credit to companies and the self-employed rose by 5.8% in the first half of 2026, signaling a shift toward future-oriented investments. Reuter suggested that if citizens feel the benefits of this growth more directly, it could help mitigate the political polarization seen in recent regional elections.

Despite these positive indicators, the recovery remains fragile due to high energy prices and structural issues. The labor market has not yet fully reflected the economic improvement, with unemployment at 6.4% in September 2026. Furthermore, social challenges persist, as approximately 16.1% of the population faced poverty risks in 2025. Data from the Federal Employment Agency indicates that employment growth since 2024 has been driven largely by foreign workers, a trend linked to Germany's aging population and a significant decrease in the working-age German citizen population.
