Germany sees growing demand for cashless payments

The discussion reflected concerns over minimum payment limits, merchant fees and consumer preferences.

A recent Bitkom survey found that 84 % of Germans now believe shops should offer at least one electronic payment option alongside cash, up from 70 % a year earlier. Support spans all ages, with 86 % of 16‑ to 29‑year‑olds and 83 % of those over 65 in favour. At the same time, 78 % say they become irritated when forced to pay only with cash, while 66 % still want the ability to pay in cash. A German Bundesbank study corroborates the trend: 55 % of respondents preferred digital channels, though cash remains the most used overall, especially among older generations.
