Germany sees historic shift toward cashless payments

A study by the Deutsche Bundesbank reveals a significant shift in payment behavior in Germany. For the first time in 2025, more than half of all daily purchases—55 percent—were made using cashless methods, while cash usage dropped to 45 percent. This marks a continuous decline from 2008, when cash accounted for 83 percent of all transactions.

In addition to changing consumer habits, new regulatory frameworks are approaching. Under EU Regulation 2024/1624, new anti-money laundering rules will take effect on July 10, 2027. These rules will require certain businesses and professional groups to verify the identity of customers making occasional cash payments of 3,000 euros or more. While large cash payments will still be permitted, they will no longer be anonymous, as customers will be required to present valid identification for documentation.
