AI impacts 380 million jobs and shifts German labor market dynamics

Artificial intelligence is significantly impacting the global and German labor markets by automating specific tasks rather than causing immediate mass unemployment. Bloomberg Economics estimates that AI could influence 380 million jobs worldwide through the substitution of specific duties. In developed economies, approximately one-quarter of the workforce holds roles where tasks are already susceptible to AI intervention.

In Germany, the impact is particularly visible among recent university graduates. While the country faces a shortage of skilled workers, the unemployment rate for academics rose to 3.3 percent in 2025, an increase of 16 percent from the previous year. Experts, including Professor Mohamed Badr of Macromedia University of Applied Sciences, note that AI is increasingly taking over entry-level 'training tasks' such as research summarization, initial text drafting, simple data analysis, and basic layout work.

This shift puts pressure on sectors heavily reliant on text, image, and audio production, including journalism, marketing, design, and legal services. The Federal Employment Agency attributes the rising academic unemployment to a combination of economic weakness and the transformative pressure exerted by AI technologies.
