Germany sees rise in COVID-19 infection rates

COVID-19 infection rates are rising in Germany as the virus continues to circulate. Recent data shows an increase in both the reported seven-day incidence and viral loads detected in wastewater. The current infection landscape is being shaped by several variants, with the Nimbus variant being the most frequently detected, alongside Stratus and Cicada.

While the international health emergency ended in May 2023, the virus remains an active respiratory illness in the country. Experts note a seasonal pattern where cases typically rise during late summer and autumn. Although current activity levels remain significantly lower than during the peak pandemic years, the virus still poses risks to specific groups, including individuals with underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, or chronic respiratory diseases.
