Germany large-scale corporate insolvencies rise 10%

Large-scale corporate insolvencies in Germany have increased by 10% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year. According to a study by credit insurer Allianz Trade, 33 companies with an annual turnover of at least 50 million euros filed for bankruptcy during this period.

The automotive industry was the most heavily impacted sector, recording seven major insolvencies. Other affected sectors included retail with five cases, followed by mechanical engineering and services, each with four cases. The cumulative annual turnover of these insolvent large companies rose by 3% to 4.5 billion euros.

Milo Bogaerts, head of Allianz Trade for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, stated that there is no expected respite for 2026, noting that the negative trend from the previous year is solidifying due to intense adaptation pressures. He warned that the failure of such large market participants can create domino effects, putting pressure on suppliers, service providers, and business partners within complex value chains.
