While total meat consumption has decreased from the 60 kilograms per person seen a decade ago, it currently sits at 54.9 kilograms, driven largely by the growing appetite for poultry. Achim Spiller, a professor at the University of Göttingen, identifies several factors contributing to this trend: the low cost of poultry, its high protein content favored by fitness enthusiasts, its convenience for processed meals, its broad religious accessibility (including Halal), and its reputation as a leaner, healthier meat option.
Data indicates that 640 million broilers were slaughtered in Germany in 2025.
