Germany sees rise in residential solar and energy self-sufficiency

German households are increasingly turning toward energy self-sufficiency through the installation of solar panels, battery storage, and emergency power systems. This shift is driven by high energy prices, geopolitical instability following the invasion of Ukraine, and a lack of trust in public energy infrastructure.

Data from the platform mydealz highlights a significant surge in consumer interest. Deals for balcony power plants rose from 52 in 2021 to 1,111 in 2025, while battery storage deals grew from 6 in 2021 to 580 in the most recent year.

Looking toward 2026, the photovoltaic market in Germany has stabilized with falling module prices. A turnkey 10 kWp system is estimated to cost between 12,000 and 17,000 euros, while a typical single-family home setup (5 to 7 kWp) ranges from 8,000 to 12,000 euros. Battery storage adds approximately 6,000 to 10,000 euros to the cost. While feed-in tariffs under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) are expected to decrease gradually, the economic benefit for homeowners remains high due to the savings gained from avoiding high retail electricity prices.
