Germany sees surge in conscientious objection requests
Following the introduction of new compulsory military service and the registration of all 18-year-olds in Germany, there has been a significant surge in requests for counseling regarding military service and conscientious objection.
Most of the 20 Protestant regional churches report an increase in demand for guidance, leading to expanded counseling services. On the Catholic side, the organization pax christi established new nationwide counseling structures late last year. Seekers often cite the heightened risk of war following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and discussions regarding German defense capabilities as motivations for seeking advice.
Official data shows a sharp rise in formal applications. By July 31, the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Affairs had received 8,302 applications for conscientious objection, more than double the 3,879 applications recorded during the entirety of the previous year.
