Germany sees wholesale and online retail recovery amid bureaucratic hurdles
The German wholesale and foreign trade sector is experiencing a cautious recovery. According to the BGA (Federal Association of Wholesale, Foreign Trade, and Services), business conditions and processes are improving as companies diversify procurement and distribution. However, BGA President Dirk Jandura noted that while there is “light at the end of the tunnel,” companies are still operating with “the handbrake on” due to ongoing uncertainty and a dampened labor market.
Bureaucracy remains a significant hurdle, with 82 percent of surveyed companies citing it as a burden. Economic expectations for Germany have risen to 1.3 percent, but many businesses are maintaining conservative operational decisions regarding production, staffing, and investment despite rising demand.
In the retail sector, August 2026 data shows a notable increase in online sales. Real revenue in internet and mail-order trade rose by 3.7 percent compared to July and 3.5 percent compared to the previous year. This digital growth outpaces the overall retail market, which saw a real increase of only 1.3 percent. Despite this uptick, high inflation and pressured consumer sentiment continue to impact the broader economic landscape.
