German police warn of rising fraud scams targeting seniors
Police in several German cities have reported a surge in fraud targeting older adults. In Würzburg, a trick thief pretended to need change for an ADAC call and stole cash from a 77‑year‑old senior. The Deutsche Rentenversicherung warned that scammers are impersonating pension‑office staff by phone, email or video to obtain personal data or extort money.
Similar impersonation schemes were recorded in Marl, where fraudsters posing as bank employees obtained a senior’s card and PIN, and in Sythen, where individuals dressed as police officers seized jewellery and a bank card. In Wabern, a fraudulent “grandchild” call led to the theft of €10,000 from a senior couple. Door‑to‑door scams in Cologne and Leverkusen involved fake water‑works workers searching apartments for cash and jewellery. An 80‑year‑old in Munich helped police trap a carpet‑seller impostor who attempted to gain entry to his home and steal valuables.
Authorities are urging seniors to verify identities, avoid giving out personal or banking information, and to contact police if approached by unknown individuals claiming official authority.
