Germany sets driver's license exchange deadlines

Drivers in Germany face upcoming deadlines for the mandatory exchange of driving licenses into the standardized EU card format. Specifically, those holding card-based licenses issued between 2002 and 2004 must replace them by January 19, 2027.

A critical distinction is made for senior citizens: individuals born before 1953 are granted an extension. Regardless of the issuance date on their current document, they have until January 19, 2033, to complete the exchange. This exception, supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport, aims to prevent elderly drivers from having to renew documents prematurely if they do not intend to drive beyond 2033.

The issuance date, located in field 4a of the EU card format, is the decisive factor for determining these deadlines. Authorities advise drivers to apply early to avoid potential processing delays as deadlines approach.
