Germany smart meter rollout reaches 5.9 percent adoption
The rollout of smart meters in Germany is progressing slowly, with only 5.9 percent of all metering points equipped with intelligent systems as of June 30, 2026. The Smart Meter Initiative (SMI) noted that this represents a minimal increase of 0.4 percentage points compared to the end of 2025. However, the Bundesnetzagentur (BNetzA) suggested that once a data collection error from the fourth quarter of 2025 is corrected, the actual increase would be 1.5 percentage points.
Despite the overall slow progress, the mandatory installation quota has been exceeded. For households with annual consumption over 6,000 kWh or those installing controllable devices like heat pumps and battery storage, the mandatory rollout reached 26.1 percent, surpassing the 20 percent target.
Regional performance varies significantly. Berlin and Westnetz lead the mandatory rollout with a 60 percent quota, while smaller operators like Gera have achieved much higher rates, reaching 92 percent. Conversely, providers such as Netze BW and Bayernwerk Netz show slower progress at 24 percent and 29 percent respectively.
