Germany strengthens critical infrastructure security against drones and cyberattacks

Critical infrastructure in Germany, including energy supplies, military facilities, and defense companies, is facing increased threats from both physical sabotage and cyberattacks. In Rheinland-Pfalz, Interior Minister Achim Schwickert reported that since 2024, thirteen crimes targeting infrastructure, the military, the judiciary, and the economy have been recorded, with military sites being the primary targets.

Physical threats include arson, property damage, unauthorized entry, and drone surveillance. Specifically, drone flights and laser pointer interference with aircraft pilots have been noted. To combat these risks, the Federal Ministry of the Interior plans to create a specialized unit of 300 personnel to utilize AI-supported jamming systems and interceptor drones.

At Frankfurt Airport, a Federal Police drone defense system has been active since late 2024. This system has identified approximately 150 illegal drone flights and 50 pilots, most of whom were hobbyists or plane spotters. Authorities are prioritizing drone protection for major airports, data centers, and industrial parks across Germany.
