Germany strengthens cyber defense through training and agency expansion

The SANS Institute and the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) have signed a four-year framework agreement to train thousands of cybersecurity experts. The program aims to provide specialized training in disciplines such as offensive security, incident response, and cloud security, offering internationally recognized GIAC certifications to personnel from the Bundeswehr and various federal agencies, including the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Federal Foreign Office.

Separately, discussions regarding the legal authority of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) continue in Germany. While the government intends to maintain the current constitutional framework, it has expressed plans to deepen cooperation between federal and state levels and intends to expand the BSI’s powers, personnel, and financial resources. This follows calls from political figures for greater autonomy for the BSI to respond more rapidly to cyberattacks targeting municipalities and states.
