Germany and South Korea deepen strategic partnership in Seoul

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung have agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a deepened strategic partnership during a summit in Seoul. The leaders focused on enhancing cooperation in high-tech sectors, including semiconductors, batteries, and artificial intelligence, with the goal of stabilizing supply chains and reducing technological dependencies on China and the United States.

Key agreements include expanding defense and security cooperation, which involves plans for a classified military information protection agreement and regular military exchanges. The two nations also aim to foster innovation through joint ventures and research initiatives, specifically targeting AI safety and industrial AI applications. To support these technological goals, the governments will coordinate on the energy needs of data centers.

Chancellor Merz also addressed regional security, stating that the involvement of North Korean troops in the conflict in Ukraine poses a direct threat to European security. He emphasized that the security of South Korea and Europe are inextricably linked. During his visit, Merz also advocated for a global free trade network based on international rules to counter unilateralism and autocratic power politics.
