Germany unveils roadmap to phase out fossil fuels by 2045
Germany has submitted a national roadmap to the United Nations detailing a complete phase-out of coal, oil, and natural gas by 2045. Environment Minister Carsten Schneider presented the plan in New York, framing the transition as a vital step toward energy independence, economic affordability, and climate protection.
As the third European nation to adopt such a specific strategy, following France and the Netherlands, Germany aims to significantly expand its renewable energy capacity. The roadmap targets an increase in renewable electricity from 55% to 80% by 2030, supported by an additional 12 GW of onshore wind and 215 GW of solar capacity. The government is also considering accelerating the coal phase-out from 2038 to 2035.
The transition is driven by a heavy reliance on energy imports; in 2024, fossil fuels comprised 65% of Germany's energy consumption, with 98% of mineral oil and 95% of natural gas being imported. Minister Schneider highlighted that geopolitical instability, such as conflicts in the Middle East and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, underscores the need to reduce dependency on volatile foreign fuel supplies.
