Germany substation incidents prompt blackout preparedness advice

Recent incidents at several German substations have highlighted the vulnerability of daily life to power disruptions. If a blackout lasts longer than 24 hours, essential services such as supermarket checkouts, water taps, refrigerators, and mobile networks may cease to function.

To prepare for such emergencies or natural disasters, the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) recommends that citizens maintain an emergency supply at home. Rather than hoarding, the BBK advises creating a ‘living stock’—a reserve of essential foods like pasta, rice, and canned vegetables that are consumed and replenished regularly based on shelf life. Items such as nuts and legumes in jars are recommended as they can be eaten without refrigeration.
