European heatwaves cause 113 billion euro economic loss

A new climate risk tracker from Allianz Trade and German insurers reveals that recent heatwaves have cost the European economy an estimated 113 billion euros, representing roughly 0.5 percent of the EU's projected annual GDP.

Italy suffered the most significant impact with 28 billion euros in losses, followed by Germany at 25 billion euros and France at 20 billion euros. These economic declines are primarily attributed to reduced productivity caused by high temperatures, which led to slowed production processes, increased worker absences, and longer required breaks due to limited air conditioning.

In Germany, the heatwave included record-breaking temperatures exceeding 42 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days in late June, contributing to an estimated 16,000 heat-related deaths this year. The study also warns of the upcoming El Niño phenomenon, which could cost 144 economies approximately 392 billion euros next year and drive up food prices in Europe.
