Germany and Iran exchange diplomatic summons after assassination plot conviction

Diplomatic tensions between Germany and Iran have escalated following a Hamburg court conviction of two men for plotting to assassinate prominent Jewish leaders. The targets were identified as Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and Volker Beck, head of the German-Israeli Society.

A 54-year-old Danish national was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison, while his 43-year-old Afghan accomplice received four and a half years. German authorities and the court concluded that the men were acting on behalf of Iranian intelligence, specifically receiving instructions from the Quds Force, an overseas unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The investigation also revealed plans for an arson attack on a kosher food business in Berlin.

In response to the court's verdict, the German Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador, Majid Nili Ahmadabadi, to lodge a formal protest. Iran has retaliated by summoning the German ambassador, Axel Dittmann, to its Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Tehran has rejected the allegations, labeling them “baseless political claims” and accusing Western nations of using security accusations as a political tactic.
