Germany survey: Abstaining from alcohol often requires justification

A representative study conducted by the health insurance provider Pronova BKK, titled ‘Alcohol in Everyday Life, Family and Profession’, reveals that many people in Germany feel pressured to justify their decision not to drink alcohol. According to the survey, 42 percent of respondents reported having to explain or justify their abstinence at least once.

The study, which surveyed 1,228 adults across Germany, found that 86 percent of participants generally consume alcohol, with 38 percent drinking at least once a week. Men showed higher weekly consumption rates, with 50 percent drinking at least once a week compared to just over 25 percent of women.

Patrizia Thamm, an economic psychologist and health promotion specialist at Pronova BKK, noted that alcohol is deeply embedded in many social situations, leading to its normalization. This social anchoring creates an unspoken expectation of conformity, where choosing not to drink can be perceived as a form of social distancing or non-conformity.
