Germany: Survey shows growing interest in stocks for retirement
A survey by the German Banking Association (Bundesverband deutscher Banken) indicates that German citizens are increasingly open to investing in stocks and securities, challenging the stereotype of the risk-averse investor. Approximately 65 percent of the 2,200 respondents consider stocks and other securities to be “good” or “very good” options for private retirement planning.
The interest is particularly high among younger demographics, with 77 percent of those aged 16 to 24 expressing a positive view. Among younger respondents, securities are cited as a primary investment form, even surpassing daily savings accounts (Tagesgeld) in preference.
Despite this growing interest, barriers remain. According to the survey, the main reasons for hesitation include a lack of funds (29 percent), fear of losses (21 percent), and a lack of knowledge (18 percent). Data from the German Stock Institute shows that the number of shareholders in Germany grew significantly in 2025, reaching 14.1 million people.
