Social media trust rises as Meta faces new minor usage restrictions

Recent findings highlight a significant shift in how information is consumed and regulated. According to the ‘Social-Media-Atlas 2026’, 43 percent of internet users in Germany now report higher trust in social media posts than in traditional news media. This figure represents a 6 percentage point increase from the previous year, with trust exceeding 50 percent among users aged 20 to 49. A substantial portion of this trust is driven by personal recommendations from friends and acquaintances.

In a separate regulatory development, Meta has reached a proposed agreement to implement stricter usage limits for minors on Instagram and Facebook. The settlement, which requires court approval, aims to shift responsibility for safety from families to the platform provider. Proposed measures include a combined two-hour daily limit for users aged 13 to 17, a blackout period from midnight to 6 a.m., and enhanced age verification protocols.

Additionally, a long-term study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology suggests that social media usage may not significantly damage family relationships, challenging common parental concerns regarding digital distraction and social alienation.
