Germany suspends naturalization for Nazi victims due to fraud
The German Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Administration Office have suspended the issuance of naturalization certificates for victims of National Socialism and their descendants. This pause affects all German foreign missions, including embassies and consulates, worldwide.
The decision follows reports of widespread fraud involving the naturalization process under Article 116, Paragraph 2 of the Basic Law. Investigations suggest that individuals, particularly from China, have falsely claimed descent from victims of Nazi persecution to obtain German citizenship.
German consulates, including one in the United States, have notified applicants of delays and the postponement of naturalization ceremonies due to recent criminal activities involving document forgery and deception. Authorities are currently reviewing all procedures related to these reparations-based naturalizations.
