Austria implements fee freeze and moderate mobility price increases

The Austrian government has announced a series of measures to combat inflation and maintain affordable mobility. Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer and Infrastructure Minister Peter Hanke confirmed that most federal fees, including those for passports, driver's licenses, and identity cards, will remain stable in 2027 by suspending automatic inflation adjustments. This decision is expected to save citizens approximately 25 million euros.

In contrast, certain mobility costs will see moderate increases. The annual car highway vignette and the Klimaticket for public transport are both scheduled to rise by 2 percent. This increase is lower than the previous year's inflation rate of 3.6 percent. To mitigate costs, an earlybird option will allow drivers to purchase the 2027 highway vignette at current prices if bought before January 1, 2027.

While the government aims to balance budget consolidation with citizen relief, the Green Party has criticized the measures as insufficient. They are calling for a comprehensive price freeze on regional annual passes and public transport tickets to ensure climate-friendly mobility remains accessible to all income levels.
