Germany tax refund phishing scam targets citizens

A phishing scam is currently targeting individuals in Germany using fraudulent emails that impersonate the Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt). The emails use the subject line ‘SRC-8536/7IE_727CA3: Ihr Erstattungsanspruch – handeln Sie bis 2026-08-06 03:35:56’ and claim that an automated annual assessment has resulted in a tax refund of 263 euros.

To claim the money, recipients are urged to click a link and complete an electronic refund form. The Consumer Advice Center warns that these messages are designed to induce panic through tight deadlines and official-looking layouts. One notable error in the current wave is a timestamp that gives recipients zero seconds to react, as the deadline matches the notice date exactly.

Authorities and the ELSTER tax service emphasize that while tax administrations may send notifications, they never include actual tax data, specific amounts, or invoices directly in an email body or as attachments. Official communications typically direct users to log in to a secured online portal. Users are advised to ignore suspicious emails and report them to the Consumer Advice Center.
