Germany: Taxi costs covered for certain disabilities

In Germany, individuals with severe disabilities or specific care levels may be entitled to have taxi or rental car costs covered by statutory health insurance for outpatient medical treatments. Under certain conditions, prior approval from the health insurance provider is not required.

Specifically, those with disability markers such as ‘aG’ (extraordinary walking disability), ‘Bl’ (blindness), or ‘H’ (helplessness) can utilize medically prescribed transport without a prior application, as the necessary permission is legally deemed granted. Additionally, individuals with care levels 4 or 5 can use such services without prior confirmation, using their care level assessment as proof.

To qualify, a physician must prescribe the transport based on medical necessity, confirming that the patient cannot use public transport or a private vehicle due to their health status. This coverage can extend to appointments for health screenings and cancer prevention.
