Germany tests quantum‑secure communication and adopts post‑quantum cryptography standards

In Wiesbaden, the Hochschule Rhein‑Main and the Hessian Central Data Processing Center (HZD) have launched a pilot project to trial quantum‑key‑distribution (QKD) over a seven‑kilometre fiber link between the university campus and the HZD headquarters. The test uses Keequant’s Andariel system and aims to protect sensitive data from future attacks by powerful quantum computers. Professors Holger Hünemohr, Steffen Reith and Nikolay Tcholtchev lead the research, with master student Jens Hummel and HZD manager Chris Hölzer overseeing implementation. Weather data are currently transmitted to evaluate the quantum‑secure channel.

Parallel efforts across Germany focus on transitioning to post‑quantum cryptography (PQC). The U.S. NIST has standardized ML‑KEM and ML‑DSA, built on CRYSTALS‑Kyber and CRYSTALS‑Dilithium, to replace vulnerable RSA and ECC schemes. The EU‑funded QUBIP project and the Open Quantum Safe (OQS) initiative provide open‑source tools and reference container images for deploying PQC, with early adoption seen in Red Hat’s Fedora distribution. These initiatives aim to safeguard public‑sector communications, banking, healthcare and other critical services against the emerging quantum threat.
