Germany's new Grundsicherung reform tightens job requirements and sanctions
From 1 July 2026 Germany replaces the Bürgergeld with a new basic security benefit called Grundsicherung. The reform obliges recipients to accept full‑time employment when it is reasonably possible, with exemptions for parents of children under 14 months, caregivers and seriously ill persons. Jobcenters may impose stricter sanctions, including a reduction of the regular benefit by up to 30 % for an unprofessional or untidy appearance in a job interview, and in extreme cases can remove the benefit entirely for total refusals. Three protection rights are removed: the mediation procedure for disputes with the Jobcenter, the asset‑grace period, and part of the housing‑cost protection. The standard monthly benefit amount stays at €563, unchanged by the reform.
