Germany tightens oversight of AfD with surveillance and control commission measures

In Thuringia, the state government has set up a parliamentary control commission aimed at limiting the influence of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) within the legislature. The move is presented as a safeguard for democratic institutions.

Separately, Bavaria's Office for the Protection of the Constitution has been authorized to monitor the AfD as a whole party. The Bavarian Administrative Court rejected the party’s appeal against this observation, confirming the decision based on previous rulings and a 2021 federal intelligence report. The Bavarian Administrative Court (BayVGH) stated that the legal questions raised by the AfD were already settled by higher courts, and upheld the observation citing the party’s extremist statements on migration, defamation, and anti‑democratic rhetoric.

Both actions reflect ongoing efforts by German authorities to enforce constitutional safeguards against the AfD’s activities.
