Germany tire change: Experts suggest temperature over calendar rules
In Germany, the traditional rule of thumb for seasonal tire changes, known as ‘O bis O’ (from October to Easter), is being re-evaluated by experts due to changing weather patterns. While this rule serves as a common orientation guide, it is not a legal requirement.
Instead, German law mandates situational winter tire use, requiring winter-capable tires during conditions involving snow, ice, or slipperiness. Experts suggest that the decision to switch should be based on actual temperatures rather than the calendar. A common recommendation is the ‘seven-degree rule,’ which suggests switching to winter tires when temperatures consistently fall below 7°C, as summer tire rubber hardens and loses grip in the cold.
Drivers in higher altitudes may need to switch as early as September, while milder winters might allow for later changes. Ultimately, while the ‘O bis O’ rule provides a general timeframe, the thermometer and current road conditions are considered more reliable indicators for safe driving.
