Germany to allocate €580 million for national air‑combat architecture

Germany plans to sign a €580 million contract with domestic firm Helsing to develop a national combat‑fighter system architecture. The project, called Combat Fighter System Nucleus (CFSN), will create software, testing infrastructure and two unmanned combat aircraft, along with ground control stations, to integrate fighter jets, drones, satellites and sensors into a single network.

The architecture is intended to become the backbone of future German air operations, allowing interoperable communication and coordinated action across manned and unmanned platforms. The German defence ministry aims to treat the architecture as state‑owned and may later incorporate additional European platforms.

The move follows a deadlock in the joint Future Combat Air System (FCAS) programme with France and Spain, prompting Berlin to pursue a national solution while still leaving open the possibility of future European integration.
