Germany to automate Kindergeld payments starting in 2027

The German Bundestag has approved a new regulation regarding Kindergeld (child benefit) payments, aimed at streamlining the process for parents. Starting in 2027, the Familienkasse is expected to approve and pay out benefits without requiring a formal application in many cases.

The rollout is planned in two stages. The first phase, tentatively scheduled for March 2027, will target families who already receive benefits for older children and are expecting another baby, as the agency will already possess the necessary banking and personal data. A second phase, planned for November 2027, will address families with their first child, a process that requires more complex data verification.

In addition to the administrative changes, a tax reform draft approved by the Federal Cabinet in September 2026 includes plans to increase the amount of Kindergeld provided. These two initiatives—the automated payment process and the benefit increases—are separate measures with different legislative timelines.
